More Than Just a Camera in the Playing Venue
Video broadcasting in chess means capturing the action in a clear, calm, and high-quality manner. Camera perspectives, vision mixing, graphics, and live direction ensure that viewers do not just see moves, but experience the tournament as a whole and take in the atmosphere.
Especially at events with a live audience, high-profile sponsors, or live commentary, structured video direction is crucial for quality and impact.
Building Blocks of a Professional Video Production
Camera Setup
Multiple camera perspectives – such as the playing hall, top board, and commentary area – provide variety and clarity without creating visual distraction. We also use movable cameras, allowing smooth transitions between boards.
Live Direction & Vision Mixing
Live vision mixing determines which image is shown at any given moment – calm, clear, and aligned with the flow of the game. Our cameras are also capable of live zooms on boards and players’ faces to capture additional moments of tension.
Overlays & Graphics
Standings, pairings, round and tournament information, as well as sponsor graphics are implemented in a subtle, CI-compliant manner. On request, highlights and short reels for social media can also be produced and published for each round.
Video as Part of the Overall Broadcast
Video production and live direction reach their full potential when combined with DGT boards and live commentary. While board transmission delivers the moves, video direction provides context, atmosphere, and visual guidance.
Depending on the event, video can be used:
- as a complement to DGT transmission
- as the central element of the broadcast
- as a social media tool (edited highlights and reels)
When Video & Live Direction Make Sense
- Tournaments with a live audience, where spectators can follow the live commentary and video feed on screens in a separate viewing area.
- Events with sponsors. Renowned companies value chess as an image carrier, and video broadcasting allows them to connect their brand identity with the tournament.
- Streams with live commentary. Video significantly enhances the stream in this context and adds drama and atmosphere.
- Top boards or final rounds. If your tournament features world-class players, spectators naturally want to see the stars in action.
- High-profile public events, where the tournament is embedded in a larger setting – for example at festivals, trade fairs, or major anniversary events.
Video Production Workflow
- Coordination regarding format, cameras, and live direction
- Setup & image testing on site
- Live direction during the event
- Optional: Recording or archive material
- Optional: Preparation of highlights for social media or reels
Is video really necessary for my event?
Not every tournament requires video production. For many formats, a stable DGT transmission is entirely sufficient. Video and live direction come into play when audience guidance, presentation, and public impact become more important, or when they help you secure stronger sponsorship opportunities.
We are happy to advise you on which combination makes sense for your event.
