DGT Transmission for Chess Tournaments

Reliable real-time game transmission – including setup, monitoring, and streaming to all major platforms.

Request DGT Transmission

Live transmission of the games – stable and structured.

With DGT transmission, the moves are captured directly from each electronic board and output live. Spectators can follow the games in real time – clearly structured and reliable, without any manual input.

Depending on the event, the transmission can be displayed directly in the tournament hall (e.g. on large screens for on-site spectators), streamed online to major platforms such as Lichess, Chess.com, and ChessBase, or used as the basis for commentary, analysis, and a full video production.

For your tournament, we can currently provide up to 50 electronic boards. Larger numbers are also possible on request with sufficient advance notice.

Our Scope of Services

  • On-site setup of the DGT infrastructure
  • Configuration and testing prior to the event
  • Ongoing monitoring during the rounds
  • Fault analysis and rapid issue resolution during live operation
  • Live distribution to the desired platforms and formats
  • Live display in the tournament hall or spectator area on large screens

All services are, of course, tailored to your requirements and your tournament format.

Output & Platforms

Depending on the requirements, the games can be delivered through different channels – for spectators, website integration, or as a data source for commentators and live production.

Common online platforms include:

  • Lichess.com
  • Chess.com
  • ChessBase / PGN export
  • Integration into websites / overlays (depending on the setup)

On-Site Requirements

For stable operation, a few key requirements are essential:

  • Sufficient space for boards and cabling
  • Reliable power supply at the venue
  • Internet access (if live streaming or online distribution is required)
  • A time window for setup and testing before the start of the first round
For large tournaments with many DGT boards, setup on the previous day is strongly recommended.

For critical infrastructure scenarios (e.g. unstable or public Wi-Fi, or internet access via mobile networks), we recommend a backup concept (such as a secondary internet connection).

Event Workflow

  1. Brief briefing (number of boards, format, platforms, schedule)
  2. Setup & testing on site
  3. Live operation & monitoring during the round(s)
  4. Post-production (exports/archiving, handover as required)

DGT Transmission – FAQ

Q: How many boards are possible at most?
A: We currently have an available inventory of 50 boards. If you need more for your event, this is not a problem—we simply require 1–2 weeks’ notice to make them available. From a technical perspective, 100 boards or more are also no issue.

Q: Is an internet connection absolutely required?
A: That depends on what you want to achieve. For pure game capture or local output (e.g. displaying games on large screens for on-site spectators), an internet connection is not strictly necessary. However, a stable internet connection is required for live web broadcasts or streaming.

Q: What happens in case of board or connection issues?
A: Continuous monitoring and structured troubleshooting are part of normal operation; issues are resolved whenever possible without interrupting the broadcast. We have more than 15 years of experience in this field. Should issues occur during transmission—for example if a player accidentally knocks over pieces in the heat of the moment—spectators will usually not even notice.

Q: Can the data be used for commentary and overlays?
A: Yes. DGT data, so-called PGNs, are very often the basis for analysis, commentary, and graphical overlays.

Q: Is it possible to rent the boards and handle the transmission independently?
A: In certain cases, we do rent out boards, but no more than a maximum of four. In general, running a transmission “on your own” is not recommended—not because we want to sell you a service at all costs, but because DGT boards are very sensitive and do not tolerate errors. A significant amount of experience is required to deliver a flawless broadcast.
