Chess Without a Board – But With an Audience

In a blindfold simultaneous exhibition, a chess player competes against multiple opponents at the same time without seeing a single board. All moves must be retained entirely in memory. For the blindfold player, each game exists solely as a mental representation.

For the audience, this creates an extraordinary experience: intense concentration, clear structure, and a constant sense of tension – live on stage.

Records in Blindfold Simultaneous Exhibitions

Between 2011 and 2016, Marc Lang held the world record in blindfold simultaneous chess. He competed simultaneously against 46 opponents, breaking the 64-year-old record of world-class grandmaster.

  • World Record (2011–2016):
    46 opponents · +25 =19 −2
  • European Record (2010):
    35 opponents · +23 =13 −3
  • World Record in Blindfold Rapid Chess (2022, Plochingen):
    16 opponents · 12.5 : 3.5 (+10 =5 −1)

International Media Presence

The extraordinary memory performance demonstrated in blindfold simultaneous exhibitions led to appearances in international science and television formats. Among others, Marc Lang was featured in the ZDF program Terra X as well as in the Australian production Redesign my Brain.

The program Redesign My Brain is still available online and can be embedded on this page. Image material from the Terra X production is also available.

More than just Chess

A blindfold simultaneous exhibition can, if desired, be enhanced with additional mental challenges—without interrupting the flow of play. These elements make the event interactive and truly unique.

Examples of optional show extras:

  • Blindfold side games such as skat, backgammon, or nine men’s morris (other games are also possible—feel free to suggest ideas).
  • Answering audience questions about extreme memory performance
(e.g. mental calculation tasks with random decimal places of π, such as: “What is the 254th digit multiplied by the square of the 763rd digit?”)
  • Blindfold knight’s tour on a 16×16 or even a 24×24 chessboard, running in parallel with the simultaneous exhibition

These elements can be integrated flexibly or deliberately omitted.

Blindfold Simultaneous Exhibition with Self-Moving Boards (Outlook)

For 2026, blindfold simultaneous exhibitions using self-moving chessboards are planned. These boards respond to spoken moves and execute them automatically.

This opens up entirely new possibilities for stage presentation and audience experience:
Moves are announced – the boards respond visibly and in perfect sync. An almost “magical” event with strong show character.

Note:
Implementation will take place once the technology meets the high standards required for reliability and precision.
